چکیده

Tooth segmentation has an important role in computer-aided orthodontics. However, fine segmentation results remain difficult to obtain because of various tooth shapes, complex tooth arrangements, and especially, tooth-crowding problems. Most published approaches or commercial solutions in this area are either interaction-intensive or inaccurate, and thus, we propose a novel tooth segmentation approach based on morphologic skeleton for scanned dental meshes. Strict single-vertex width boundaries are obtained through improved morphologic skeleton technique. The skeleton describes the topological relationship among different dental parts on meshes and is exploited by automatic adjacent teeth separation. The morphologic skeleton technique eliminates dependence on a complex, precise mesh feature estimation and is implemented efficiently. The characteristics of the skeleton also facilitate effective teeth separation. Our techniques significantly reduce user interactions and are robust to various levels of tooth-crowding problems. We have conducted experiments on clinical dental models, thus demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed approach. & 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Interactive Tooth Separation from Dental Model Using Segmentation Field

Tooth segmentation on dental model is an essential step of computer-aided-design systems for orthodontic virtual treatment planning. However, fast and accurate identifying cutting boundary to separate teeth from dental model still remains a challenge, due to various geometrical shapes of teeth, complex tooth arrangements, different dental model qualities, and varying degrees of crowding problem...

A Mesh Meaningful Segmentation Algorithm Using Skeleton and Minima-Rule

In this paper, a hierarchical shape decomposition algorithm is proposed, which integrates the advantages of skeleton-based and minima-rulebased meaningful segmentation algorithms. The method makes use of new geometrical and topological functions of skeleton to define initial cutting critical points, and then employs salient contours with negative minimal principal curvature values to determine ...

A Skeleton-Based Approach for Consistent Segmentation Transfer

We present a skeleton-based approach for mapping consistently a segmentation of a source mesh to a target mesh. The source and target meshes are semantically similar but their geometries may be different. We assume that the segmentation of the source mesh and the skeleton correspondence between the meshes are provided. Our method first establishes the skeleton-boundary correspondence and then p...
